MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur fell, while prices of urad were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana corrected slightly after rising steeply due to positive market sentiment following a rise in festival demand, they said. Prices of tur fell tracking a drop in prices of imports, they said, adding that prices of urad are likely to rise in the near term due to a slowdown in imports.
CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 from Monday to INR 6,400-INR 6,425 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 100 bags to 1,800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices have corrected after rising by INR 300-INR 400 per 100 kg in a few days, he said. After staying range-bound for a few weeks, prices began rising last week due to festival demand, lifting market sentiment, he said. "The market got too excited, pushing prices up sharply," he said.
The fall in prices is temporary, and a rise in demand for festivals is likely to support prices in the short term, Kedia said. Consumption of chana and besan-based products usually rises during festivals, supporting prices of the legume. A drop in arrivals is also supporting prices, he said. Arrivals have almost halved on month, he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 6,325 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola fell by INR 50 from Monday to INR 6,900-INR 6,925 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Arrivals rose by 300 bags to 2,800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices of domestic tur fell tracking a fall in prices of imports, he said. The demand for domestic tur has been sluggish for a few weeks now, leaving the market without any direction, he said. "The market has now made the prices of imports the benchmark for prices of domestic tur," he said.
Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, fell by INR 47 from the previous day to INR 6,000-INR 6,612 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 6,600-INR 7,400 per 100 kg.
Urad prices are likely to rise in the short term due to delay in shipments from Myanmar and Brazil, need-based demand from millers, and low stocks with mills and traders, the association said. Prices may also rise due to a rise in festival demand, it said. The market will keep an eye on prices of imports from Myanmar and the volume of shipments from Brazil, it said. End
