Karnataka kharif acreage down 1% on yr at 5.78 mln ha as of Fri

MUMBAI – Kharif crops in Karnataka have been sown across 5.78 million hectares as of Friday, down 1% on year from 5.84 million hectares sown in the previous year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage rose nearly 10% on year to 1.52 million hectares, the report showed.
The area sown under paddy so far rose to 214,900 hectares from 185,600 hectares sown last year. Bajra acreage was down at 94,600 hectares from 121,100 hectares last year, and that of jowar also fell to 33,300 hectares from 47,200 hectares a year ago.
Tur acreage stood at 1.22 million hectares, down from 1.47 million hectares a year ago. The acreage under moong was slightly down at 411,500 hectares from 412,800 hectares last year. Urad acreage rose to 94,200 hectares from 89,400 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses fell to nearly 1.80 million hectares from 2.04 million hectares sown last year.
The total area sown under all oilseeds so far stood at 610,800 hectares, down from 672,200 hectares sown in the same period last year. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 409,600 hectares from 429,400 hectares a year ago. The acreage under groundnut was down at 134,300 hectares from 178,600 hectares last year.
Sugarcane acreage was up at 663,500 hectares from 586,600 hectares a year ago. The area sown under cotton also rose to 713,100 hectares from 613,800 hectares last year.
From Jun. 1 to Jul. 21, Karnataka has received 8% above normal rainfall at 399.9 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The sowing of kharif crops in Karnataka usually begins in June and ends by September. The main kharif crops in the state are maize, tur, soybean, sugarcane, horse gram, cotton, red chillies, and turmeric. End
