Rajasthan kharif acreage up 19% on yr at 14.2 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI - The area sown under kharif crops in Rajasthan touched 14.2 million hectares as of Monday, up more than 19% on year from 11.9 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 16.5 million hectares, which is the average of the past five years, more than 86% has been covered so far.
Maize acreage rose to 934,286 hectares from 901,130 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under paddy was up at 276,171 hectares from 222,390 hectares last year. The acreage under bajra stood at 4.1 million hectares, up from 3.2 million hectares a year ago while that of jowar rose to 618,321 hectares from 575,090 hectares last year.
The area under moong was up at 2.2 million hectares from 1.8 million hectares a year ago. The acreage under urad rose to 283,249 hectares from 275,420 hectares last year. Tur acreage stood at 13,061 hectares, up from 3,000 hectares sown a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses was up at 3.4 million hectares from 2.6 million hectares sown last year.
The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 2.1 million hectares, up from nearly 2.0 million hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 955,180 hectares from 1.1 million hectares a year ago while that of groundnut rose to 915,231 hectares from 743,030 hectares last year.
Cotton acreage was up at 626,380 hectares from 495,730 hectares sown in the same period last year, as per the report. The acreage under guar, a major crop in the state, rose to nearly 2.0 million hectares from 1.7 million hectares a year ago.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. The sowing of kharif crops got a head start this year due to the early onset of the southwest monsoon, resulting in a large on-year jump in acreage. From Jun. 1 to Jul. 21, the state has received 337.1 millimetres of rainfall, a whopping 118% above the normal of 154.8 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
