Gujarat kharif acreage down 8% on yr at 5.84 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Farmers in Gujarat have sown kharif crops across 5.84 million hectares as of Monday, down nearly 8% from 6.33 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, more than 68% has been covered so far.
Groundnut acreage in the state was up at 1.94 million hectares from 1.83 million hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under soybean fell to 224,964 hectares from 285,811 hectares last year. The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was at 2.25 million hectares, up from 2.16 million hectares a year ago.
The area sown under paddy fell to 341,785 hectares from 415,029 hectares sown last year, according to the report. Acreage of maize was down at 219,016 hectares from 274,456 hectares last year, and that of bajra also fell to 123,522 hectares from 128,266 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all pulses so far was 194,211 hectares, down from 253,697 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. Under pulses, the acreage under tur was down at 116,901 hectares from 170,051 hectares last year. The acreage under urad also fell to 39,031 hectares from 49,497 hectares a year ago, while that of moong rose to 32,990 hectares from 27,408 hectares sown last year.
Cotton acreage in the state was down at 1.96 million hectares from 2.23 million hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. The area sown under vegetables fell to 152,577 hectares from 168,237 hectares last year.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1-Jul. 21, Gujarat recorded 411.7 millimetres of rainfall, 48% above the normal of 277.7 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. End
