MUMBAI - India's per capita vegetable oil consumption is likely to rise to 12.68 kg per person by 2034, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development-Food and Agriculture Organization (OECD-FAO) Agricultural Outlook 2025-34. India, the world's second-largest consumer and leading importer of vegetable oils, is projected to sustain a per capita food consumption growth of 2.5% per annum, the report said.
The per capita vegetable oil consumption in India stood at 8.53 kg per person in 2012-14, and rose to 9.97 kg in 2022-24, data from the report showed. A rise in the crushing of domestically produced oilseeds, supported by numerous government programmes to increase production, is likely to push consumption further, reaching the 12.68 kg per person mark by 2034, the report said.
Markedly, soybean production is expected to increase in India, Russia, Ukraine, and Canada during the forecast period. India's growth in vegetable oil imports is likely to continue at 12% per annum, reaching 21 million tonnes by 2034, the report said. Demand for vegetable oils is seen rising due to population growth, urbanisation, and rising disposable incomes, the report said. However, India's imports of palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia are expected to decline. "The Indian government is carrying out several initiatives to reduce its dependency on imports...these programmes aim at implementing farming techniques and services to strengthen and support domestic production," the report said.
Globally, the per capita consumption of vegetable oil for food is projected to increase by 0.5% per annum to 15.68 kg per person in 2034 due to a strong rise in food demand in middle and low-income countries, the report said. The two dominant uses of vegetable oil are for food and food preparation, which accounts for 52% of oil consumption, and for biomass-based diesel feedstock that accounts for 18%, the report said. End
