MUMBAI – In response to concern over a lack of notification for certain crop varieties in Assam, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan has instructed the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to notify suitable varieties of rajma, masoor, arhar, sunflower, fodder maize, garlic, and onion specific to Assam's agro-climatic conditions, the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare said in a release Monday.
"To ensure farmers benefit from the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), he also directed relaxation of the mandatory Digital Farmer Registry requirement," the release said. Additionally, Chouhan approved a one-year extension for the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region in Assam and instructed ministry officials to examine other related matters.
Chouhan met ministers from Assam and Rajasthan in Delhi Monday, where he was briefed on Rajasthan's actions against counterfeit seeds, fertilisers, and pesticides. Chouhan shared that he had written to all chief ministers urging action on this issue. "The central government will not allow any fraud against farmers — those who commit wrongdoing will not be spared." End
