NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves fell to a five-week low of $696.67 billion, down $3.06 billion from the previous week, as of Jul. 11, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. Reserves declined for the second consective week, possibly due to revaluation losses.
The dollar index, which measures the strength of the dollar against a basket of six major currencies, strengthened almost 1% in the week ended Jul. 11. Calculated in dollar terms, the central bank's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen, held by the RBI.
Foreign currency assets as of Jul. 11 were at $588.81 billion, down $2.48 billion. The value of the RBI's gold holdings was at $84.35 billion, down $498 million from the previous week. End
