MUMBAI – Prices of wheat rose in some key markets Friday due to firm demand and lower arrivals in local markets following heavy rainfall over most parts of north India, traders said. Also, there is additional demand for the food grain due to the upcoming festival season, which is also supporting prices, they added. However, prices of rice and maize held steady from the previous day amid lack of fresh cues.
WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were up at INR 2,530-INR 2,540 per 100 kg from INR 2,520-INR 2,525 per 100 kg the previous day on strong demand and low arrivals, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 1,500 bags to 2,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) due to continuous heavy rains in the state, he said.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Rajasthan for Friday for extremely heavy rainfall. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. There is also risk of flooding and inundation in central and eastern parts of the state.
Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were also up by INR 10 from the previous day at INR 2,790 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said and added there is demand in the market due to the upcoming festival season. However, the price of wheat at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai was steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale dealer. In Delhi, the price of wheat was down INR 5 at INR 2,775 per 100 kg, traders said. Vora said prices are likely to remain range-bound for next two weeks, with a slight upward bias.
MAIZE prices in Indore remained steady from the previous day at INR 2,300 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound with a slight positive bias due to lower arrivals in the market, he added.
Prices of 1401 basmati RICE at the Vashi market held steady from the previous day at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Vora said. Prices of 1121 basmati rice variety were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. Prices of broken rice remained stable from the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said. Prices of sona masoori rice from the previous season, which is known as old grain, held steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar, said. The crop that was harvested in Mar-May is priced at INR 4,600 per 100 kg as consumers usually prefer old rice over new, he added. End
