NEW DELHI - The International Grains Council has projected global food grain output in 2025-26 at a record 2,376 million tonnes, a million tonne lower than 2,377 million tonnes projected in June, according to the council's grain market report released Thursday. The reduction in overall production is mainly due to modest cuts for barley and sorghum, the council said.

The council has raised its projection for global consumption in 2025-26 to 2,376 million tonnes from 2,373 million tonnes estimated in June, mainly on account of a projected uptake in consumption of maize. Global consumption of maize is estimated to be higher due to an increase in feed, industrial and food uses.

The council has projected global carryover stocks for 2025-26 at 582 million tonnes, down from 586 million tonnes projected in June. It has maintained its forecast for global trade in 2025-26 to 430 million tonnes. World rice production for 2025-26 is seen stable at 544 million tonnes in July, as per the report.

It has also maintained its 2025-26 global soybean output at 428 million tonnes. Global soybean consumption in 2025-26 is seen at 429 million tonnes. "While availabilities should remain plentiful, a solid on-year gain in utilisation could see carryovers tighten, including in key exporting markets," the report said. The carryover stocks for 2025-26 were estimated at 83 million tonnes, up from 82 million tonnes projected in June.

The council maintained its 2025-26 wheat production estimate at 808 million tonnes in July. The estimate is higher than 800 million tonnes seen for 2024-25. Consumption is seen steady at 814 million tonnes in 2025-26, far above the 2024-25 consumption at 802 million tonnes. Carryover stocks for 2025-26 are seen slightly higher at 265 million tonnes, up a million tonne from the previous month's estimate.  End
