Telangana kharif acreage down 1 per cent on year as of Wednesday, paddy up 58 per cent

MUMBAI – Farmers in Telangana have sown kharif crops across 6.11 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, down slightly by 1% from 6.16 million acres sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Paddy acreage in the state rose sharply, by 58% on year, to 778,294 acres, the report showed.

 

The area sown under maize rose significantly to 449,913 acres from 289,541 acres sown last year, according to the report. Jowar acreage rose to 28,002 acres from 23,950 acres a year ago. 

 

Tur acreage in the state was up at 343,823 acres from 314,364 acres sown a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under moong fell to 40,165 acres from 44,930 acres last year, and that of urad dipped slightly to 12,539 acres from 12,610 acres a year ago. The total area under all pulses stood at 396,820 acres, down from 372,810 acres a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 331,720 acres, down from 339,474 acres sown in the previous year. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 330,686 acres from 334,722 acres last year. Soybean accounts for most of the acreage under oilseeds in the state.

 

Cotton acreage in the state so far rose to 3.86 million acres from 3.76 million acres sown a year ago, according to the report.

 

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 592.2 thousand million cubic metres, as of Wednesday, compared with 228.96 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report said. From Jun. 1-Jul. 17, the state has received 171.9 millimetres of rainfall, 29?low the normal of 242.7 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.

 

In the week ended Wednesday, the state received a cumulative rainfall of 10.5 millimetres, ranging from 1.3 millimetres in the Nalgonda district to 56.4 millimetres in the K.B. Asifabad district, spread over two days, the report said. These timely rains have been crucial in alleviating moisture stress in rain-fed crops, it said.  End
