MUMBAI – Prices of mustard and soybean were steady in key markets across the country on Thursday, while those of groundnut were mixed, traders said. Prices of most oilseeds are likely to remain range-bound, as demand for edible oils is expected to increase only during festivals, they said.

Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur in Rajasthan were steady at INR 7,350-INR 7,375 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency, an agricultural commodities trader. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were steady at 375,000 bags, said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research. Mustard seed prices have been firmer than those of other oilseeds, as the government is holding back from releasing stocks, said Biren Vakil, founder and chief executive officer at Paradigm Commodity Advisors.

Mustard seed prices at Kota in Rajasthan were steady at INR 6,800 per 100 kg, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. Arrivals were at 9,000 bags, down 1,000 bags from the previous day, he said.

SOYBEAN prices at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh were stable at INR 3,900-INR 4,300 per 100 kg, local trader Narendra Porwal said. Arrivals were at 3,400 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), down 400 bags from the previous day, he said. Prices of the oilseed are likely to remain at the current levels for the next one or two months as both domestic and export demand are subdued at the moment, Porwal said. Export demand is low as the quality of soybeans is poor compared to those from America, he added.

Soybean prices at Gondal in Gujarat were also steady at INR 3,800-INR 4,100 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 16,900 bags, down from 18,900 bags the previous day, said Asok Virvani, a local trader.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 4,700-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 1,600 bags, up 300 bags from the previous day, Virvani said. Like soybean, groundnut prices are expected to decline in the medium term due to weak demand on account of the increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.

Groundnut prices in Gondal rose INR 100 to INR 4,500-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 1,890 bags, down from 2,490 bags the previous day, Virvani said.
