NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of jeera rose while those of coriander fell and turmeric remained steady on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Thursday. Prices of jeera rose due to seasonal demand, while coriander fell due to the continued sale of old stocks at higher levels, analysts said.
The most-active August contract of TURMERIC remained steady at INR 13,328 per 100 kilograms, due to limited trading activities, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. However, fundamentals seem firm in the long term, supported by good demand amidst an empty pipeline and ongoing supply tightness, they added. Meanwhile, turmeric production is expected to be strong this year, as farmers have likely increased acreage in response to the robust price realisation seen throughout the season. The higher output is likely to put downward pressure on prices.
The most-active August contract of JEERA rose 0.5% to INR 19,520 per 100 kg, driven by seasonal demand, which is providing some support amid abundant availability and rising selling pressure at higher price levels.
This is likely to limit any significant upside in the near term, SMC Global said. Under the prevailing market conditions, prices are expected to face strong resistance around the INR 20,600 per 100 kg to INR 20,700 per 100 kg levels, they said.
The most-active August contract of CORIANDER slipped 0.3% to INR 7,630 per 100 kg, tracking spot markets, where prices continued to fall as traders sold old stocks at higher price levels, analysts said. Based on current factors, such as strong domestic demand and declining arrivals, prices may increase by INR 200-300 in the medium term, they said. However, the medium-term outlook for coriander prices appears bearish, as persistently elevated prices may prompt sellers to offload stocks to take advantage of the higher rates, SMC Global said.
