MUMBAI – Prices of mustard and groundnut were mixed across key markets, while those of soybean were steady Wednesday, traders said. Most oilseed prices are likely to remain range-bound until the festival season, but mustard seed may move slightly higher, they said.

Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur in Rajasthan were steady at INR 7,350-INR 7,375 per 100 kg, according to the Marudhar Trading Agency, an agricultural commodities trader. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country rose 25,000 bags from Tuesday to 375,000 bags, said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research. Mustard seed prices have been firmer than those of other oilseeds as the government is holding back from releasing stocks, said Biren Vakil, founder and chief executive officer at Paradigm Commodity Advisors.

In Kota, Rajasthan, mustard seed prices rose INR 50 to INR 6,800 per 100 kg, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 10,000 bags, he said.

SOYBEAN prices at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh were stable at INR 3,900-INR 4,300 per 100 kg, local trader Narendra Porwal said. Arrivals were steady at 3,800 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. According to experts, soybean prices are expected to decline as demand is shifting to cheaper palm oil.

Soybean prices at Gondal in Gujarat were also steady at INR 3,800-INR 4,100 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 18,900 bags, up from 8,400 bags the previous day, Ashok Virvani, a local trader, said. Soybean prices are largely steady as there is only need-based demand, he said.

The country's soymeal stock at the end of June rose to 175,000 tonnes from 149,000 tonnes in May. The rise in soymeal stock despite lower soybean arrivals, production, and crushing indicates subdued domestic and export demand. Soybean arrivals in June were reported at 550,000 tonnes, lower than 850,000 tonnes a year ago, according to The Soybean Processors Association of India.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 4,700-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 1,300 bags, same as the previous day. Like soybean, groundnut prices are expected to decline in the medium term due to weak demand on account of increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.

In Gondal, groundnut prices fell INR 100 to INR 4,500-INR 5,500 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 1,890 bags, down from 2,490 bags the previous day, Virvani said.
