MUMBAI – Wheat prices rose in key markets Wednesday because of firm demand and because the government is yet to start selling the grain in the open market, traders said. Prices of maize also rose slightly on lower arrivals, while those of rice were unchanged from the previous day, they said.
WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were up INR 20 at INR 2,520 per 100 kg from the previous day on firm demand, Aniket Mehta, a local trader, said. Arrivals doubled from Tuesday to 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) as heavy rains have stopped in the state, traders said. Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were also up INR 20 from the previous day at INR 2,770 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said.
Traders also said the government has not yet started selling wheat in the open market, which is also supporting prices of the grain. The government usually starts selling wheat in the open market from Jul. 1.
However, the price of wheat at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai was steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, Devendra Vora, wholesale dealer, said. In Delhi, the price of wheat was down INR 20 at INR 2,780 per 100 kg, traders said. They are now waiting for the government to start selling wheat under its open market sales scheme. The government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open market sales of wheat in the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).
MAIZE prices in Indore were up INR 20 at INR 2,300 per 100 kg on lower arrivals in the domestic market, Kochar said. Maize arrivals usually fall in July as the rabi maize with farmers gets exhausted. Fresh arrivals will only start in October, when the kharif crop is harvested.
Prices of 1401 basmati RICE at the Vashi market were steady from the previous day at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Vora said. Prices of 1121 basmati rice variety were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg.
Prices of broken rice held steady from the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said. Prices of sona masoori rice from the previous season, which is known as old grain, were steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, Ravi Shankar, a local trader, said. The crop that was harvested in Mar-May is priced at INR 4,600 per 100 kg as consumers usually prefer old rice over new, he added. End
