Karnataka kharif area dn 0.2% YoY at 5.46 mln ha; maize up 14%

MUMBAI – The area sown under kharif crops in Karnataka progressed to 5.46 million hectares as of Friday, down 0.2% on year from 5.47 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage in the state rose 14% on year to 1.49 million hectares, the report showed.
The area sown under paddy rose to 154,000 hectares from 132,600 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under bajra was down at 90,600 hectares from 111,000 hectares last year.
Tur acreage so far stood at 1.13 million hectares, down from 1.34 million hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under moong rose to 408,700 hectares from 399,700 hectares last year, and that of urad rose to 91,300 hectares from 88,100 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses was down at 1.70 million hectares from 1.89 million hectares a year ago.
The total acreage under all oilseeds fell to 584,400 hectares from 654,600 hectares in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 401,500 hectares from 426,500 hectares last year. Similarly, the acreage under groundnut was down at 117,800 hectares from 168,000 hectares sown a year ago.
Cotton acreage in the state was up at 667,400 hectares from 608,700 hectares sown in the same period last year, the report showed. Sugarcane acreage also rose to 629,100 hectares from 574,100 hectares a year ago.
From Jun. 1-Jul. 15, Karnataka has received 6% above normal rainfall at 335.5 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The sowing of kharif crops in Karnataka usually begins in June and ends by September. The main kharif crops grown in the state are maize, tur, soybean, sugarcane, horse gram, cotton, red chillies, and turmeric. End
