MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were largely steady in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh Tuesday, traders said. Only a couple of mills raised prices in anticipation of demand rising at the end of the month. Mills in Maharashtra also kept prices steady owing to the lack of fresh triggers, they said.
Mills across Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady, with the exception of some that raised prices by INR 5-INR 10 per 100 kg on expectations of retail prices rising once the Kanwar yatra ends around Jul. 25, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. The increase was too small to have any impact on the average price, he said.
During this week traders are unlikely to buy as there will be no transport vehicles available to move stocks, so the pipeline will eventually dry up, which will lead to higher demand for the sweetener when the yatra ends and trucks are available once more, Gupta said.
Sugar prices have been lower this month as there are no festivals and demand from confectioners is limited, Gupta said. In addition, demand for ice creams and cold drinks is also down with temperatures falling across the country following the onset of rains.
In Maharashtra, prices were steady again due to the lack of fresh triggers, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. With rains covering most of the country, traders are hesitant to stock sugar as it absorbs moisture and spoils quickly, he said.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,850-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,942-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,880 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1915 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 0.5 at 16.39 cents per pound. Global sugar prices have some support from reduced sugar production in Brazil. UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, said the cumulative 2025-26 Brazil Center-South sugar output till June is down 14.3% on year at 12.2 million tonnes. End
US$1 = INR 85.81
