MUMBAI – India's soymeal exports in June fell nearly 29% on year to 97,000 tonnes, the Soybean Processors Association of India said Tuesday. Cumulative exports of soymeal in Oct-Jun, the first nine months of the edible oil year 2024–25, fell to 1.56 million tonnes from 1.78 million tonnes in the same period a year ago, data from SOPA showed.

India exported soymeal to more than 70 countries from October to June, with Bangladesh, Nepal, Germany, France, Japan, and Kenya being the top buyers, according to the association. Soymeal production in June declined to 631,000 tonnes from 710,000 tonnes a year ago. Output in the first nine months fell to 6.87 million tonnes from 7.54 million tonnes a year ago.

Soybean arrivals in June were reported at 550,000 tonnes, lower than 850,000 tonnes a year ago. The arrivals in Oct–Jun fell to 8.90 million tonnes from 9.80 million tonnes a year ago, SOPA said.

Soybean crushing during Oct-Jun was 8.70 million tonnes, down from 9.55 million tonnes a year ago, SOPA estimates showed. Total soybean stocks at the end of June with agencies, oil mills, traders, and farmers were at 3.04 million tonnes, down from 3.88 million tonnes a month ago, SOPA data showed. Soybean stocks with farmers, traders, and processing plants were at 1.85 million tonnes as of June end and government agencies--National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India—were about 1.20 million tonnes as of Jul. 10, SOPA said.

Meanwhile, soymeal stock at the end of June rose to 175,000 tonnes from 149,000 tonnes in May. The rise in soymeal stock despite lower soybean arrivals, production, and crushing indicates subdued domestic and export demand.

Soybean is crushed to extract soyoil, leaving the by-product soymeal. This is primarily used as poultry and livestock feed. Indian soymeal is non-genetically modified and rich in protein, making it attractive in global feed markets. However, competitive pressure from cheaper feed alternatives such as distiller's dried grains with solubles weighs on exports. India is among the largest importers of soyoil and an exporter of soymeal.  End
