MUMBAI – Prices of mustard rose on Tuesday, while those of groundnut were mixed and soybean were steady in the key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of oilseeds are likely to remain largely range-bound as demand for most edible oils is low during this time and will rise only during the festival season, they said.

Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur in Rajasthan rose INR 100 to INR 7,350-INR 7,375 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were steady at 350,000 bags, said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research. Mustard prices have been firmer compared to other oilseeds as the government is holding back from releasing stocks, said Biren Vakil, Founder and CEO at Paradigm Commodity Advisors.

SOYBEAN prices at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh were stable at INR 3,900-INR 4,300 per 100 kg, local trader Narendra Porwal said. Arrivals were at 3,800 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), up 600 bags from the previous day, he said. According to experts, soybean prices are expected to decline as demand is shifting to cheaper palm oil.

Soybean prices at Gondal in Gujarat were also steady at INR 3,800-INR 4,100 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 8,400 bags, down 400 bags from the previous day, Ashok Virvani, a local trader, said. Soybean prices are largely steady as there is only need-based demand, he said.

Total soybean stocks at the end of June with agencies, oil mills, traders, and farmers were at 3.04 million tonnes, down from 3.88 million tonnes a month ago, the Soybean Processors Association of India data showed. The soymeal stock at the end of June rose to 175,000 tonnes from 149,000 tonnes in May. The rise in soymeal stock despite lower soybean arrivals, production, and crushing indicates subdued domestic and export demand. Soybean arrivals in June were reported at 550,000 tonnes, lower than 850,000 tonnes a year ago, according to SOPA.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 4,700-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 1,300 bags, down 100 bags from the previous day, Porwal said. Like soybean, groundnut prices are expected to decline in the medium term due to weak demand on account of the increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.

Groundnut prices in Gondal rose by INR 100 to INR 4,500-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, with the arrivals at 2,490 bags, up from 1,008 bags in the previous day, Virvani said.
