MUMBAI - Wheat, rice, and maize prices were steady Tuesday from the previous day in key markets in the country amid lack of fresh cues, traders said. Prices of basmati rice variety are likely to rise by INR 200-INR 400 per 100 kg in the near term on supply concerns, traders said.

Prices of 1401 basmati RICE at Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady from the previous day at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. Prices of 1121 basmati rice variety were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. He expects prices to rise by INR 200-INR 400 per 100 kg in the near term due to concerns about lower acreage during the ongoing kharif season, which may affect supply. Also, only a few traders currently have basmati rice stock as the last year's crop is almost exhausted in the market, he added.

The higher minimum support price may draw more farmers to non-basmati rice, Vora said. The minimum support price of paddy common and grade A varieties has been increased by 3% each to INR 2,369 per 100 kg and INR 2,389 per 100 kg for the kharif marketing season 2025-26 (Oct-Sept).

Prices of broken rice held steady from the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said. Prices of sona masoori rice from the previous season, which is known as old grain, were steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, Ravi Shankar, a local trader, said. Meanwhile, the crop which has been harvested during Mar-May was priced at INR 4,600 per 100 kg as consumers usually prefer old rice over new, he added.

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady from the previous day at INR 2,500 per 100 kg, Aniket Mehta, a local trader, said. However, arrivals fell by 1,000 bags to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) on Tuesday due to heavy rains in the state, he said. Also, arrivals are usually higher on Monday compared to Tuesday, he added. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Tuesday for very heavy rainfall. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.

Wheat prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady from the previous day at INR 2,750 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. Price of wheat at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai was steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, Vora said. In Delhi, wheat prices were up INR 5 at INR 2,775 per 100 kg, traders said.

Traders are now waiting for the government to start selling wheat under the open market sales scheme. The government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open market sales of wheat in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).

MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,280 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices may rise to INR 2,400 per 100 kg as there are no more rabi maize arrivals from farmers, he said.   End
