Gujarat kharif acreage dn 7% YoY at 5.03 mln ha; maize dn 30%

MUMBAI – Farmers in Gujarat have sown kharif crops across 5.03 million hectares as of Monday, down more than 7% on year from 5.43 million hectares in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage in the state fell nearly 30% on year to 159,589 hectares, the report showed.

 

The area sown under paddy was down at 133,670 hectares from 185,350 hectares sown last year, according to the report. Bajra acreage also fell to 88,941 hectares from 99,547 hectares a year ago. 

 

Tur acreage in the state so far stood at 81,115 hectares, down from 123,216 hectares last year, the report showed. The area sown under urad also fell to 24,594 hectares from 28,306 hectares a year ago. On the other hand, the acreage under moong rose to 25,286 hectares from 16,500 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses was down to 133,954 hectares from 170,066 hectares sown last year.

 

The total area under all oilseeds was up to 2.08 million hectares from 2.0 million hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut rose to 1.85 million hectares from 1.72 million hectares a year ago. The acreage under soybean fell to 190,216 hectares from 255,909 hectares last year.

 

Cotton acreage in the state stood at 1.86 million hectares, down from 2.10 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, the report showed. The area sown under vegetables fell to 127,084 hectares from 137,560 hectares a year ago. 

 

Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, nearly 59% has been covered so far. Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October.  End
