MUMBAI – Prices of mustard rose Monday in key spot markets in the country, while those of soybean and groundnut were steady, traders said. Prices of most edible oils are on the downtrend due to low demand and cheaper imported palm oil until demand revives during the festival season, they said.

Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur in Rajasthan rose INR 50 to INR 7,250-INR 7,275 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were steady at 350,000 bags, said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research. Although mustard prices have been firmer compared to other oil seeds, higher carryover stocks from the previous harvest, amid low demand from the edible oil industry, have limited the gains in mustard oil, traders said.

SOYBEAN prices at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh were stable at INR 3,900-INR 4,300 per 100 kg, local trader Narendra Porwal said. Arrivals were also steady at 3,200 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. According to experts, soybean prices are expected to decline as demand is shifting to the more affordable palm oil.

Soybean prices at Gondal in Gujarat were also steady at INR 3,800-INR 4,100 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 8,800 bags, Ashok Virvani, a local trader, said. Soybean prices are largely steady due to need-based demand, he said.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 4,700-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, with arrivals unchanged at 1,400 bags, Porwal said. Like soybean, groundnut prices are expected to decline in the medium term due to weak demand on account of the increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking. Groundnut prices were steady in Gondal too at INR 4,500-INR 5,500 per 100 kg, with the arrivals at 1,008 bags, Virvani said.
