MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh rose as mills anticipated higher demand after the kawar yatra ends, said traders. Mills is Maharashtra kept prices steady due to demand-supply parity, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 25-INR 30 per 100 kg as they expect demand to pick up during the last week of the month, when the Kawar yatra ends, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. During this week traders will not buy as there will be no truck available for trasporting stocks, so the pipeline will eventually dry up, which will lead to higher demand for the sweetener when the yatra ends and there is availability of trucks again, Gupta said.

Sweetener prices largely were on the lower side during this month, as demand for ice creams and cold drinks was down due to lower temperatures across the country following the monsoon, Gupta said. Moreover, there were no festivals this month, so there was limited demand from confectioners as well, he added.

In Maharashtra, prices were steady again as demand and supply were on a par, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Due to rains across the country, traders are hesitant to stock sugar as it absorbs moisture and gets spoiled, said Kuvadia.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Up INR 25-INR 30 at INR 3,820-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 25-INR 30 at INR 3,850-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,942-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,880 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1844 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down 0.5 at 16.48 cents per pound, due to expectations of a global sugar surplus. Commodities trader Czarnikow projected a 7.5 million tonnes, global sugar surplus for the 2025-26 season, the largest surplus in 8 years.  End

US$1 = INR 85.98
