MUMBAI – Wheat prices in Rajasthan's Kota were up Monday as arrivals fell amid ongoing heavy rainfall in the state, traders said, adding that there is also firm demand for the staple grain. Wheat prices in other key markets were unchanged from the previous day, they added. Prices of basmati rice variety rose in key markets on concerns about lower acreage in the ongoing kharif season. Prices of maize and non-basmati rice also remained stable from the previous day due to lack of new cues, traders said.
WHEAT prices in Kota were up INR 20 at INR 2,500 per 100 kilogram as arrivals fell from the previous day, Aniket Mehta, a local trader, said. Arrivals fell by 3,000 bags to 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) on Monday due to heavy rains in the state, he said. There is also firm demand for wheat which supported prices, Mehta added.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Rajasthan till Tuesday due to extremely heavy rainfall. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. A private weather forecaster Skymet said very heavy showers are likely over Rajasthan for the next three days, with central parts of east Rajasthan and its border areas with west Rajasthan likely to witness the fury of monsoons.
Wheat prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady from the previous day at INR 2,750 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. Price of wheat at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai was steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale dealer. In Delhi, wheat prices were up INR 20 at INR 2,780 per 100 kg, traders said.
Traders are now waiting for the government to start selling wheat under the open market sales scheme. The government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open market sales of wheat in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).
Prices of 1401 basmati RICE at Vashi were up at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg from INR 7,100-INR 7,200 per 100 kg the previous day, Vora said. Prices of 1121 basmati rice variety rose by INR 200 to INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. Basmati prices rose as there are concerns about lower acreage during the ongoing kharif season, which may lead to lower supply, Vora said. Also, only a few traders currently have basmati rice stock as the last year's crop is almost exhausted in the market, he added.
The higher minimum support price of non-basmati rice may draw more farmers to non-basmati rice, Vora said. The minimum support price of paddy common and grade A varieties has been increased by 3% each to INR 2,369 per 100 kg and INR 2,389 per 100 kg for the kharif marketing season 2025-26 (Oct-Sept). Moving forward, prices are likely to rise by INR 200-INR 400 per 100 kg, he added.
Prices of broken rice held steady from the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said. Prices of sona masoori rice from the previous season, which is known as old grain, were steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, Ravi Shankar, a local trader, said. Meanwhile, the crop which has been harvested recently during Mar-May was priced at INR 4,600 per 100 kg as consumers usually prefer old rice over new rice, he added.
MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,280 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices may rise to INR 2,400 per 100 kg as there are no more rabi maize arrivals from farmers, he said. End
