NEW DELHI – The National Stock Exchange of India on Monday launched electricity futures contracts, the exchange said in a release. Last week, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India had also launched electricity futures, marking a significant step forward in the development of India's electricity derivatives market.
As of 1400 IST, the electricity contracts on the NSE recorded trades of over 4,000 lots, representing more than 200 million units of electricity. The total turnover crossed INR 873.6 million, with the volume-weighted average price recorded at INR 4,368 per megawatt-hour, the exchange said.
The first trade opened at INR 4,430 per megawatt-hour. By midday, prices were trending around INR 4,364 per megawatt-hour, indicating healthy participation across participants, including power generators, discoms, large industrial consumers, and market intermediaries, the exchange said.
NSE said the launch offers a transparent, risk-management platform to hedge electricity price volatility, aid long-term power planning, and support India's energy transition goals. End
