Andhra Pradesh kharif area up 14% on yr as of Wed; paddy up 25%

MUMBAI - The area sown under kharif crops in Andhra Pradesh rose to 512,000 hectares as of Wednesday, up nearly 14% on year from 451,000 hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture government. Paddy acreage in the state rose by more than 25% on year to 207,000 hectares, the report showed.

 

The area sown under maize rose to 35,000 hectares from 31,000 hectares a year ago. The acreage under bajra fell to 7,000 hectares from 8,000 hectares last year.

 

Tur acreage was down at 26,000 hectares from 44,000 hectares sown last year. The acreage under moong was up at 2,000 hectares from 1,000 hectares a year ago, and that of urad rose to 8,000 hectares from 5,000 hectares last year. The total area sown under all pulses fell to 36,000 hectares from 50,000 hectares sown a year ago.

 

As per the report, the total area sown under oilseeds stood at 55,000 hectares, down from 87,000 hectares sown in the previous year. Among oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut fell to 42,000 hectares from 76,000 hectares last year. Soybean acreage rose to 1,700 hectares from 1,000 hectares sown a year ago. Cotton acreage rose to 164,000 hectares from 95,000 hectares sown in the corresponding period last year. The area under sugarcane fell to 6,000 hectares from 9,000 hectares a year ago.  

 

Though rainfall over Andhra Pradesh has been deficient in the monsoon season so far, it is likely to improve and be above normal in July, officials and experts said. From Jun. 1-Jul. 13, coastal Andhra Pradesh has received 134.1 millimetres of rainfall, 21% below the normal of 169.3 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. Rayalaseema has received 60.0 millimetres of rainfall, 43% below normal for the same period.  End
