NEW DELHI – The US Department of Agriculture has raised its estimate for global cotton production in 2025–26 (Aug–Jul) to 118.4 million bales, up from 117.0 million bales projected in June, according to its July report. The upward revision is driven by improved crop outlooks in China, the US, and Mexico, which more than offset expected declines in Pakistan and Egypt. One bale is 480 pounds, the report said.
"For the 2025-26 world cotton balance sheet, production, consumption, and ending stocks are raised while trade and beginning stocks are reduced," the report said.
World cotton consumption is also projected to be higher at 118.12 million bales, compared with 117.76 million bales seen last month. The USDA attributed this to stronger mill use projections in Pakistan and Mexico, partially offset by declines in Italy and Germany. Cotton trade, however, is expected to be slightly lower at 44.69 million bales, down 100,000 bales from June.
Global beginning stocks for the season are now estimated at 76.78 million bales, down from the previous estimate of 77.3 million bales, largely due to adjustments in China and the US. However, ending stocks for 2025–26 have been revised up by 520,000 bales to 77.32 million bales as higher production more than offsets the increase in consumption and decline in beginning stocks.
For India, USDA has retained its estimates for production at 23.5 million bales, consumption at 25.5 million bales, and exports at 1.0 million bales, but increased ending stocks estimates to 9.75 million bales from 9.70 million bales.
For Pakistan, the USDA has lowered its production estimates to 5.0 million bales from 5.2 million bales. The department increased its imports view to 5.9 million bales from 5.3 million bales amid increased consumption and reduced production. End
