MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric rose while those of jeera and coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Friday. Prices of turmeric rose due a drop in supply and a dearth of stocks with processors. Prices of jeera and coriander fell on profit-booking.
The most active August contract of TURMERIC was up 0.5% at INR 13,492 per 100 kg, rising for the third consecutive day. Prices were supported by an empty processing pipeline and tight supply conditions, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. The anticipated seasonal demand from August is likely to keep market sentiment positive in the coming months, SMC Global said. Prices were also supported by short-covering after estimates of a rise in acreage due to favourable monsoon rainfall had triggered a weakness in prices previously, Kedia Advisory said.
The most active August contract of JEERA fell 2.1% to INR 19,675 per 100 kg, on profit booking after a rise in prices for three consecutive days. Prices had risen due to an increase in buying enquiries, SMC Global said. Prices had also risen due to predictions of strong seasonal demand in the short term, the brokerage said. Prices of jeera could fall further in the near term due to an ample availability of stocks, the brokerage firm said.
The most active August contract of CORIANDER fell 0.1% to INR 7,482 per 100 kg on profit booking after a price rally which lasted five days, SMC Global said. Prices had risen previously, tracking a rise in demand for the spice in spot markets, SMC Global said. The fall in prices is likely to be limited as supplies of the spice in key coriander-producing regions are low, the brokerage said.
