MUMBAI – Prices of wheat rose slightly in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, for the second consecutive day Friday on firm demand, traders said. However, prices of the staple grain in other key markets held steady, they added. Prices of maize and rice also remained stable from the previous day due to lack of new cues, as per the traders.

WHEAT prices in Indore were up INR 10 from the previous day at INR 2,750 per 100 kilogram due to firm demand, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Although prices rose by just INR 10 Friday, the INR-10 rise from Thursday adds up to INR 20 in two days, reflecting high demand for the grain. However, prices are unlikely to continue their uptrend going forward, he said. Traders expect wheat prices to remain range-bound in the near term.

Prices of the staple grain in Kota, Rajasthan, were unchanged from the previous day at INR 2,475-INR 2,500 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals were also steady from the previous day at 7,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Mehta said. Price of wheat at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai was steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, said wholesale dealer Devendra Vora. In Delhi, wheat prices were at INR 2,750 per 100 kg, down by INR 10 from the previous day, traders said.

Traders are now waiting for the government to start selling wheat under the open market sales. The government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open market sales of wheat in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).

Prices of 1401 basmati RICE at Vashi were steady at INR 7,100-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of 1509 basmati rice remained unchanged from the previous day at INR 7,000-INR 7,200 per 100 kg. Prices of broken rice held steady from the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said. Prices of sona masoori rice were steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said.

The government has released the reserve prices for rice that are valid till Jun. 30, 2026. The government will sell broken rice at a reserve price of INR 2,320 per 100 kg, 25% broken rice at INR 2,890 per 100 kg, and custom-milled rice with 10% broken grain at INR 3,090 per 100 kg under open market sales.

The Food Corp. of India can offload 5.2 million tonnes of rice for ethanol production to distillers without participating in the e-auction at INR 2,320 per 100 kg. These reserve prices of all rice varieties will be effective from Nov. 1 to Jun. 30.

MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,280 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices may rise to INR 2,400 per 100 kg as there are no more rabi maize arrivals from farmers, he said. Currently, demand for maize is stable as low-cost rice is being diverted to ethanol production, he said. Maize may see a major price boost only if the government halts sales of rice for ethanol, he added.  End
