MUMBAI – Prices of mustard rose slightly in key markets Friday, while those of soybean and groundnut were steady, said traders. Demand for these oilseeds is lower at the moment and will increase during the festival season, when the need for edible oil rises, they said.
Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose INR 50 to INR 7,200-INR 7,225 per 100 kg, according to the Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were steady at 350,000 bags, said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research. Higher carryover stocks from the previous harvest amid low demand from the edible oil industry are likely to keep prices steady or lower them, said traders.
SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, remained stable at INR 3,900-INR 4,300 per 100 kg, local trader Narendra Porwal said. Arrivals were also steady at 3,200 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. According to experts, soybean prices are expected to decline as demand shifts to the more affordable palm oil.
GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were also steady at INR 4,700-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, with arrivals unchanged at 1,400 bags, Porwal said. Like soybean, groundnut prices are expected to decline in the medium term on weak demand due to the increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.
