MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were largely steady on Friday in Uttar Pradesh, traders said. Sugar prices in Maharashtra were also steady due to a lack of fresh cues, they said.
Barring one or two mills, sugar factories in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India.
One or two mills that raised prices by INR 10 per 100 kg, he said. The price increase by a couple of mills was not enough to influence the average price in the state. Demand is expected to fall during the next few days as transportation of sugar in the state will be difficult due to Kanwar Yatra, Gupta said. Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage by devotees to Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri to fetch holy water from the Ganges.
Sweetener prices will remain under downward pressure this month as demand for ice creams and cold drinks is down due to lower temperatures across the country following the monsoon, Gupta said. There are no festivals this month, so there is limited demand from confectioners as well, he said.
In Maharashtra, prices were steady again due to a lack of fresh cues, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Due to rains across the country, traders are hesitant to stock sugar as it absorbs moisture and gets spoiled, said Kuvadia.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,910 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,910 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,942-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,880 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1610 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up nearly 1% at 16.39 cents per pound. Sugar prices rose, tracking a rise in crude oil prices. Higher crude oil prices increase diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, which will lower the production of sugar. End
US$1 = INR 85.80
