MUMBAI – Prices of basmati rice rose Thursday as export demand for the staple grain improved amid easing tensions in West Asia, traders said. However, prices of wheat, maize, and non-basmati rice were steady from the previous day owing to the lack of fresh cues, traders said.

Prices of 1401 basmati RICE at Vashi in Navi Mumbai were up by INR 100 at INR 7,100-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. Prices of 1509 basmati rice also rose from the previous day by INR 200 to INR 7,000-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the aromatic grain rose as tensions between Iran and Israel eased, which led to a slight increase in export demand, he said.

Further, traders expect basmati rice production to fall from last year owing to lower acreage in the current kharif season. The area under basmati rice may fall in the crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) as the minimum support prices for non-basmati rice has been increased from previous years. The higher minimum support price may draw more farmers to non-basmati rice, Vora said. The minimum support price of paddy common and grade A varieties has been increased by 3% each to INR 2,369 per 100 kg and INR 2,389 per 100 kg for the kharif marketing season 2025-26 (Oct-Sept).

Prices of broken rice were steady from the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said. Prices of sona masoori rice were steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said.

WHEAT prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were up INR 10 from the previous day at INR 2,740 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. No major reason can be cited for such negligible price movement, Kochar said. Wheat prices in Delhi rose INR 10 to INR 2,750 per 100 kg, according to traders.

Prices of the staple grain in Kota, Rajasthan, were largely unchanged from the previous day at INR 2,475-INR 2,500 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals were also steady from the previous day at 7,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Mehta said. The price of wheat in the Vashi market was steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, said Vora.

MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,280 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are likely to rise to INR 2,400 per 100 kg as there are no more rabi maize arrivals from farmers, he said. Currently, demand for maize is stable as low-cost rice is being diverted to ethanol production, he said. Maize may see a major price boost only if the government halts sales of rice for ethanol, he said.  End
