MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh rose Thursday as there was some demand at lower rates and as traders were filling the pipeline before the Kawar yatra starts, said traders. In Maharashtra, prices were steady again as demand and supply were on par, they said.
Mills across Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg as demand improved slightly at lower rates, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. The Kawar yatra starts Friday, so traders bought and stocked up on sugar as trucks won't be available once the procession starts, Gupta said.
However, prices will largely remain range-bound this month as because of the monsoon season, temperature across the country is cooler and there is not much demand for ice-creams and cold drinks, which require sugar in bulk for manufacturing, Gupta said. There are no festivals this month, so there is limited demand from confectioners, hence prices are likely to be largely on the lower side, he added.
In Maharashtra, prices of the sweetener were steady as demand and supply were on par, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Due to rains across the country, traders are hesitant to stock sugar as it absorbs moisture and gets spoilt, said Kuvadia.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Up INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,820-INR 3,910 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,820-INR 3,910 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,942-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,880 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1543 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down 1.2% at 16.36 cents per pound. Sugar prices fell tracking fall in crude oil prices. Lower crude oil prices make ethanol blending less attractive, thereby increasing sucrose diversion for sugar production. End
US$1 = INR 85.63
