MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops in Telangana as of Wednesday saw a meagre increase from the corresponding period the previous year. The area under foodgrains was significantly higher on year, while the oilseed acreage fell from the corresponding period last year.

According to data from the state agriculture department, total kharif crops acreage reached 5.63 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, against 5.62 million acres sown in the same period last year. The acreage under foodgrains rose nearly 7% to 1.4 million acres, mainly due to a sharp increase in the area under maize and paddy. Although, there was a sharp increase in coarse cereals acreage, the area under urad and moong saw a significant fall, limiting the overall increase in foodgrain acreage to just 7%.

The state's largest grain crop paddy's acreage rose over 37% to 501,129 acres, the data showed. Maize acreage was a whopping 118% higher on year at 534,318 acres, the report showed. Coarse cereals' acreage was sharply up by 68% on year at 1.06 million acres.

Under pulses, tur acreage stood at 327,460 acres, up from 284,462 acres sown last year, as per the report. The acreage under moong fell 19% to 34,307 acres from 42,558 acres and that under urad saw a significant fall of 35% on year at 10,052 acres. The total area sown under all pulses was, however, up at 372,080 acres from 343,086 acres last year.

The total area under all oilseeds fell over 4% on year to 308,496 acres, the data showed. Among oilseeds, the acreage under soybean and groundnut fell over 3% and 77%, respectively, from the same period last year. Soybean accounts for most of the acreage under oilseeds in the state. Experts said farmers are shifting from oilseeds to grains like paddy and maize because of higher returns and minimum support price.

Cotton acreage rose to 3.63 million acres from 3.57 million acres, the report showed. Kharif crops are sown once the southwest monsoon sets in over the country. In Telangana, sowing of kharif crops begins in June while harvest ends as late as December for some crops.

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 535.21 thousand million cubic metres, as of Wednesday, compared with 228.61 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report said. From Jun. 1-Jul. 9, the state has received 165.5 millimetres of rainfall, 11% below the normal of 185.4 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.  End
