MUMBAI – Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan Wednesday said he will hold a meeting Friday at 1000 IST in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, to address the declining cotton production in India. The meeting aims to develop strategies to increase cotton production, reduce input costs, and promote climate-resilient, high-quality seeds, as per a press statement from the ministry.
According to the statement, the minister expressed concern over the current low productivity of cotton in the country, which has been further affected by the tobacco streak virus in the Bt cotton crop, leading to a rapid decline in production and causing distress to farmers. The tobacco streak virus, a worldwide phenomenon, can reduce the production of buds and flowers in the crop. Plants infected with the virus mature late and are smaller. An early infection can cause the plant's death before the buds can grow and flowering can begin.
The meeting, the ministry said, will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including cotton farmers, farmer organisations, scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, agriculture ministers from cotton-producing states, and industry experts. Chouhan has also invited suggestions from farmers and other stakeholders, who can share their ideas and concerns on a toll-free number. End
IST, or Indian Standard Time, is five-and-a-half hours ahead of GMT
