Maharashtra kharif acreage down 4% YoY as of Mon; maize up 33%

MUMBAI – Farmers in Maharashtra have sown kharif crops across 10.80 million hectares as of Monday, down 4% on year from 11.25 million hectares in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage rose 33% on year to 1.12 million hectares, the report showed.
The area sown under paddy was up at 272,609 hectares from 245,961 hectares sown last year, according to the report. Acreage under bajra fell to 245,149 hectares from 326,441 hectares a year ago, and that of jowar also fell to 56,849 hectares from 76,371 hectares last year.
Tur acreage in the state stood at 984,396 hectares, down from 994,405 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under moong fell to 178,244 hectares from 194,827 hectares last year, while that of urad rose to 298,099 hectares from 292,134 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses fell to 1.49 million hectares from 1.52 million hectares last year.
The total area sown under all oilseeds was 4.15 million hectares, down from 4.45 million hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 4.06 million hectares from 4.32 million hectares a year ago, and that of groundnut fell to 85,868 hectares from 111,639 hectares sown last year.
So far, cotton acreage in the state is down at 3.36 million hectares from 3.67 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Sugarcane acreage also fell to 81,739 hectares from 93,011 hectares covered last year.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. The water level in the dams of Maharashtra was 56.81% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 26.6% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
