MUMBAI – Futures contracts of all three spices rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Tuesday. Prices of turmeric and jeera rose due to concerns about a drop in output in the current crop season, while those of coriander increased due to short covering, traders said.
The most-active August contract of TURMERIC rose 1.0% to INR 13,186 per 100 kilograms due to concerns about lower yields despite expectations of a higher acreage for the crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun), Kedia Advisory said. Initial estimates suggest a 15-20% increase in turmeric acreage as farmers move away from other crops with lower profit margins, the brokerage said. However, the yield in key growing regions such as Nanded in Maharashtra is likely to take a hit as small rhizomes and crop rot weigh on productivity, it said.
Prices could rise further due to hopes of a recovery in demand from August, analysts at SMC Global Securities said.
The most-active July contract of JEERA rose 0.2% to INR 19,590 per 100 kg on concerns about a fall in crop output. Estimates peg jeera output in 2025-26 at 900,000-920,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), slightly lower than last year's 11 million bags due to a fall in acreage, Kedia Advisory said.
Additionally, production shortfalls in other key jeera-growing countries such as Syria, Turkey, and Afghanistan due to adverse weather conditions could limit global supply, potentially supporting Indian exports, Kedia Advisory said.
The most-active July contract of CORIANDER was up 0.8% at INR 7,270 per 100 kg due to short covering, SMC Global said. However, the rise in prices could be limited due to a steep decline in prices in key spot markets such as Kota in Rajasthan, the brokerage said. A large carry-over stock and selling pressure from farmers could also limit gains, the brokerage said.
Contract | Exchange | Unit (kg) | Price (INR) | Change (INR) |
Coriander Jul | NCDEX | 100 | 7,270 | 60 |
Jeera Jul | NCDEX | 100 | 19,590 | 45 |
