MUMBAI – Prices of all pulses were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana are seen rising in the near term on seasonal demand during monsoon, they said. Prices of tur were steady in the lower range due to the ample availability of cheaper imports, but are likely to rise on demand from retailers, they said. Prices of urad are likely to remain steady in the short term as millers are making only need-based purchases, they said.
CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,000 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 200 bags from Monday to 1,800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices are steady as low demand for the legume is on a par with its low supply, he said. The region has been experiencing heavy rainfall, which has kept both buyers and sellers away from the market, he said.
Prices are likely to rise once the region gets a break from the incessant showers, Kedia said. Seasonal demand for the legume seen during the monsoon is likely to push prices up by INR 150-INR 200 per 100 kg by mid-July, he said.
Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,975-INR 6,025 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola were steady at INR 6,875-INR 6,900 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Arrivals fell by 500 bags from the previous day to 1,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Similar to chana, prices remain unchanged due to low activity in the market, he said. Prices are also steady in the lower range as they are under pressure from the availability of cheaper imports, he said.
Prices are likely to rise by INR 300-INR 400 per 100 kg by mid-July as retailers and wholesalers do not have sufficient stocks currently, Kedia said. "On average, retailers purchase around 200 bags of tur from millers for a month, but they have reduced it to only 50 bags due to low demand," he said. Similarly, wholesalers have reduced their purchases to around 500 bags from their usual of 2,000 bags, he said. "They are bound to run out of their stocks soon, so demand is seen increasing," he said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,950-INR 7,050 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,075-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 6,600-INR 7,400 per 100 kg.
Urad prices are expected to remain range-bound in the short term as millers are purchasing only as per needs amid the ongoing summer arrivals and "slow processed demand", the association said in its weekly report Monday.
