Gujarat kharif acreage up 7% on yr as of Mon, groundnut up 25%

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Gujarat as of Monday increased to 4.31 million hectares, up 7% on year from 4.03 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Groundnut acreage rose 25% on year to 1.76 million hectares, the report showed.

 

The acreage under soybean rose to 158,360 hectares from 156,729 hectares sown last year. The total area under all oilseeds was up at 1.94 million hectares from 1.58 million hectares a year ago, according to the report.

 

Maize acreage stood at 80,689 hectares against 80,080 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under paddy fell to 30,060 hectares from 47,919 hectares last year. The acreage under bajra rose to 52,295 hectares from 24,802 hectares a year ago.

 

The acreage under tur in the state was 48,717 hectares, down from 58,838 hectares a year ago, according to the report. On the other hand, the acreage under moong rose to 12,080 hectares from 5,790 hectares last year, and that of urad also rose to 11,085 hectares from 8,125 hectares a year ago.

 

Cotton acreage fell to 1.71 million hectares from 1.86 million hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. The area sown under vegetables was up at 103,854 hectares from 99,583 hectares a year ago.

 

Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, more than 50% has been covered so far. Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October.  End
