MUMBAI – Wheat prices were up slightly in the Kota market in Rajasthan on firm demand as markets in the state reopened after five days, traders said. Arrivals were also higher, they said. Prices of rice and maize were steady from the previous day owing to a lack of fresh cues, traders said.

The prices of WHEAT at Kota were up INR 50 at INR 2,480-INR 2,500 per 100 kg owing to firm demand, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Demand was firm Monday as the market was shut last week on account of a traders' strike. Further, the government has not started open market sales of wheat so far, which also supported prices, Mehta said. Arrivals rose to 8,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 4,000 bags a week ago, he added.

Last week, beginning Tuesday, traders in Rajasthan went on strike and all agricultural markets in the state were shut. The traders were protesting against the imposition of 1% Krishi Kalyan cess on traded agricultural products in the state's markets from Jul. 1. They were demanding that the cess be reduced to 0.5% for three years. Mehta said the government has now kept the cess unchanged at 0.5%.

Wheat prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were largely steady at INR 2,735 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. The price of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market was steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, Devendra Vora, a local wholesale dealer, said. Wheat prices in Delhi were also unchanged from the previous day at INR 2,740 per 100 kg, traders there said.

Mehta said wheat prices are likely to rise if the government does not start selling wheat in the open market. Traders and market participants expect the government to start selling wheat from mid-July. A few say the Centre may start the sales only in September, during the festival season. According to media reports, the government has set a price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for the open market sales scheme in the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), up from INR 2,325 per 100 kg for fair and average quality wheat in 2024-25.

MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,270 per 100 kg, Kochar said. In the medium term, prices could reach INR 2,400 per 100 kg, he said. The demand for maize is stable as low-priced rice is being diverted to produce ethanol, he said. A major maize price boost may only come if the government halts the sale of rice for ethanol, he said.

Prices of basmati sella RICE at Vashi were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety and broken rice were also steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg and INR 2,700 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of sona masoori rice were steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said.  End
