MUMBAI – Prices of mustard were steady Monday, those of soybean were mixed in key markets, and prices of groundnut were down, said traders. Oilseed prices are likely to remain range-bound or fall in the near term due to less demand for edible oils at the moment, they said.
Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 7,075-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, according to commodities trader Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were also steady at 400,000 bags, said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research.
In Kota, Rajasthan, markets reopened after a strike by traders protesting against the imposition of Krishi Kalyan cess. Prices were at INR 6,650 per 100 kg, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. Arrivals were at 10,000 bags, Sameriya said.
SOYBEAN prices in Gondal, Gujarat, rose by INR 100 from the previous day to INR 3,800-INR 4,100 per 100 kg, local trader Ashok Virvani said. Arrivals were up at 16,700 bags, from 8,700 bags the previous day (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. Soybean prices are expected to decline as demand shifts to more affordable palm oil, experts said.
Prices of soybean in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, were down by INR 25 per 100 kg at INR 3,900-INR 4,300 per 100 kg, said local trader Narendra Porwal. Arrivals were at 3,300 bags, he said.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal fell by INR 200 to INR 4,500-INR 5,300 per 100 kg, with arrivals up at 3,000 bags from 1,650 bags the previous day, Virvani said. Prices fell due to higher arrivals. Groundnut prices are also expected to decline in the medium term, as demand remains weak on increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, which is commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.
In Ratlam, prices of groundnut were down by INR 200 per 100 kg at INR 4,700-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, said Porwal. Arrivals were at 1,900 bags, he added.
