Karnataka kharif area down 1% YoY at 5.06 mln ha; maize up 15%

MUMBAI – The kharif crop acreage in Karnataka as of Saturday was 5.06 million hectares, down nearly 1% from 5.09 million hectares in the corresponding period last year, according to a report by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage was up 15% on year at 1.40 million hectares, the report showed.
The area under paddy was 109,000 hectares, up from 102,700 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under bajra fell to 81,400 hectares from 107,300 hectares last year, and that of jowar also fell to 30,100 hectares from 43,200 hectares a year ago.
Tur acreage fell 21% on year to 988,200 hectares, the report showed. The acreage under moong rose to 404,700 hectares from 393,300 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Urad acreage so far is at 87,800 hectares against 87,100 hectares sown last year. The total area sown under all pulses was down at 1.55 million hectares from 1.79 million hectares a year ago.
Total area sown under all oilseeds was down at 561,500 hectares from 618,800 hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 394,400 hectares from 418,500 hectares a year ago. The acreage under groundnut stood at 106,600 hectares, down from 146,000 hectares last year.
Sugarcane acreage so far was up at 613,900 hectares from 542,200 hectares last year, and that of cotton rose to 611,900 hectares from 547,500 hectares a year ago, the report showed.
The sowing of kharif crops in Karnataka usually begins in June and ends by September. The main kharif crops grown in the state include maize, tur, soybean, sugarcane, horse gram, cotton, red chillies, and turmeric. End
