MUMBAI – Tur prices are likely to remain range-bound this week due to limited demand from millers amid availability of cheaper substitutes like yellow peas, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly market update. Market analysts expect tur prices to move in the range of INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg during the week.

Retail and wholesale demand for tur dal is weak due to cheaper substitutes such as masoor and yellow peas. Moreover, two to three direct shipments are expected from Myanmar to Chennai, the association said.

However, kharif tur crop is not expected until December, Africa's crop won't arrive before mid-September, and the quality of Sudan's new tur crop is average and below millers' expectations, the association quoted millers from Katni in Madhya Pradesh as saying. With festivals coming, Burma lemon and desi tur is the only option available that could support prices, the pulses body said.

Sowing is still on but patchy rains in key states may affect the production outlook, which could also support tur prices. While heavy rains are affecting sowing and non-sowing areas, Karnataka and Maharashtra still need more rain, the pulses body said.

Last week, prices of the lemon variety tur from Myanmar saw a slight recovery due to demand from millers at lower rates and as cost and freight quotes offered stayed firm. Desi tur also moved up in some markets as mills purchased at lower rates, arrivals dropped due to rain, and farmers were busy with kharif sowing, it said.

In the week ended Saturday, tur prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 25 from the previous week to INR 6,900-INR 6,9250 per 100 kg. Prices of tur in Delhi were steady at INR 7,050 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
