Rajasthan kharif acreage up 193% on yr as of Fri; maize up 151%

MUMBAI – The area sown under kharif crops in Rajasthan reached 9.74 million hectares as of Friday, up sharply by 193% on year from 3.33 million hectares covered in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage in the state rose 151% on year to 750,689 hectares, the report showed.

 

The area sown under bajra stood at 3.30 million hectares, up from 627,040 hectares sown last year, according to the report. The acreage under paddy rose to 103,940 hectares from 35,890 hectares a year ago, while that of jowar rose to 430,243 hectares from 120,290 hectares last year.

 

Moong acreage in the state was up at 1.35 million hectares from 246,570 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under urad also rose to 188,379 hectares from 21,910 hectares last year, and that of tur was up at 4,910 hectares from 470 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses was 2.0 million hectares, up from 331,080 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 1.56 million hectares, up from 1.09 million hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut was up at 736,648 hectares from 485,410 hectares a year ago. The area sown under soybean rose to 736,086 hectares from 588,180 hectares last year.

 

Cotton acreage so far was up at 604,315 hectares from 444,790 hectares last year, the report showed. The acreage under guar, a major crop in the state, rose to 781,781 hectares from 246,520 hectares a year ago. 

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. This year, the southwest monsoon hit the Kerala coast on May 24, eight days ahead of its normal date of Jun. 1, and covered southern and northeast India entirely by May 29, along with parts of east and central India. The monsoon covered entire India on Jun. 29, nine days before the normal date of Jul. 8. As such, the sowing of kharif crops in the state got a head-start this year, resulting in a large on-year jump in acreage.  End
