MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady on Friday, said traders. There is very little demand, so prices might fall in the coming days, they said.

Mills across Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady after cutting rates for the past two days, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Market participants are of the view that the sales quota of 2.2 million tonnes is deemed to be more than sufficient for July as there is little demand, Gupta added.

Demand from institutional buyers such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers is usually less during the monsoon season as the temperature is cooler. Moreover, in July there is no festival demand, said Gupta. In the resale market of Uttar Pradesh, prices fell by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg due to subdued demand, he added.

In Maharashtra, prices of the sweetener were steady due to a lack of fresh cues, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Due to rain across the country, traders are hesitant to stock sugar as it easily absorbs moisture and spoils, said Kuvadia.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,810-INR 3,885 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,830-INR 3,915 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,942-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,880 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1725 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange rose 5% to 16.37 cents per pound due to concerns about lower production in Brazil. UNICA, Brazil's representative body for sugar companies, said the cumulative 2025-26 Brazil centre-south sugar output until mid-June was down 14.6% on year at 9.40 million tonnes.  End

US$1 = INR 85.39
