MUMBAI – Prices of mustard and soybean were steady in key markets and those of groundnut rose, said traders. Mustard and soybean prices were largely steady as there was very little demand for oilseeds in the market, they said.
Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 7,075-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, according to Marudhar Trading Agency, a commodities trader. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were at 400,000 bags, said Rajesh Patel of GGN reseach.
Mustard seed prices at Kota in Rajasthan were unavailable as the market was closed on account of a strike by traders protesting against the imposition of the Krishi Kalyan cess, local trader Mahesh Sameriya said. According to local media reports, 247 agricultural markets across Rajasthan are shut since Tuesday and will remain so till Friday to protest against the policies of the state government. The protest follows the government's decision to impose a Krishi Kalyan cess of 1% on traded agricultural products in state markets, starting Tuesday. Traders have sought a reduction in the cess to 0.5% for the next three years. Until June, the government had been deferring implementation of the cess in two-month intervals.
SOYBEAN prices in Gondal, Gujarat, were steady from the previous day at INR 3,800-INR 4,000 per 100 kg, local trader Ashok Virvani said. Arrivals were at 8,700 bags, same as the previous day (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. Soybean prices are expected to decline as demand shifts towards more affordable palm oil, experts said.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal rose by INR 400 to INR 4,500-INR 5,500 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 1,650 bags, down by 90 bags from the previous day, Virvani said. Groundnut prices are also expected to decline in the medium term, as weak demand persists amid the increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, which is commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.
