MUMBAI – The global FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 105.5 points in June, down 0.8% on month and 22.8% lower than a year ago, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. The index declined due to a fall in Indica prices by 1.1% from its May level, it said.
Japonica and Glutinous rice prices also fell by 1.8?ch, mainly due to slowdown of short-grain sales from Vietnam and fall in purchases of glutinous rice by China and the Philippines, according to the organisation. On the contrary, the Aromatic Index rose 0.7% on month, supported by tight basmati supplies in Pakistan and strong Hom Mali exports in Thailand.
Demand for Indica rice weakened in Asian markets as surge in freight rates slowed containerised trade. Sales to regular African markets helped support Indian prices and limited export availability lent some stability in Pakistan, as overall trade remained sluggish, weighing on prices elsewhere.
The sharpest declines were seen in Vietnam, where prices of 5% broken rice fell to their lowest since January 2022 amid a strong winter-spring harvest, high import volumes, and the start of the early summer-autumn harvest. Prices also fell in Thailand despite the sustained appreciation of the baht against the US dollar.
The price of Vietnam's 25% broken rice was $360.6 per tonne in June, lower than $368.7 per tonne in May. The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety rose to $368.5 per tonne in June from $362.4 per tonne in May while that of Thailand's 25% broken variety fell to $407.5 per tonne in June from $414.8 per tonne last month. India Pusa Basmati variety remained unchanged at $875.0 in June from the previous month.
The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India fell to $365.1 per tonne in June from $366.8 per tonne in May and that of 5% broken non-basmati rice fell to $379.0 per tonne from $381.8 per tonne, the report said.
Pakistan's 5% broken rice declined to $391.6 in June from $392.3 per tonne in May while price of the basmati rice was at $1,067.3 per tonne in June, up from $1,032.5 in May. End
