MUMBAI – Prices of grains were steady in most key spot markets in the country on Thursday, traders said. The demand for maize is stable due to diversion of low-priced rice for ethanol production, while prices of wheat are likely to remain steady till the government announces wheat open market sales, they said.

The price of WHEAT at Indore in Madhya Pradesh was largely steady at INR 2,735 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. The price in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market was steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, Devendra Vora, a local wholesale dealer, said. However, wheat prices rose in Delhi by INR 15 to INR 2,740 per 100 kg, traders said.

Prices are likely to remain steady in the short term with stable demand for the grain, Kochar said. Prices will depend on when the government starts selling wheat in the market, he said. Kochar expects the government to release some stocks ahead of festivals to stabilise prices and ensure availability.

Wheat traders expect the government to start selling wheat in the open market from mid-July. According to media reports, the government has set a price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for the open market sales scheme in the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), up from INR 2,325 per 100 kg for fair and average quality wheat in 2024-25.

The strike by traders in Rajasthan is unlikely to affect wheat prices, though it may affect soybean prices, Vora said. Agriculture markets in Rajasthan are shut as traders have been protesting since Tuesday against the imposition of 1% Krishi Kalyan cess on traded agricultural products in the state's markets from Jul. 1. Traders are demanding that the cess be reduced to 0.5% for three years.

MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,270 per 100 kg, Kochar said. In the medium term, prices could reach INR 2400 per 100 kg, he said. The demand for maize is stable as low-priced rice is being diverted to ethanol, he said. A major maize price boost may only come if the government halts rice sales for ethanol, he said.

Prices of basmati sella RICE at Vashi were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety and broken rice were also steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg and INR 2,700 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. The area under basmati rice may fall in the current crop year (Jul-Jun) as the minimum support prices of non-basmati rice are higher. The higher MSP makes non-basmati rice more attractive to grow, Vora said.

Prices of Sona Masoori rice were also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said.   End
