MUMBAI - Futures contracts of turmeric fell, while those of jeera and coriander rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Thursday. Prices of turmeric fell due to selling for profit. Prices of jeera and coriander rose on hopes of renewed export demand from West Asia.
The most-active August contract of TURMERIC was down 0.4% at INR 13,862 per 100 kg as profit-booking continued for the second consecutive day, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. Prices were also weighed down by the prospect of a rise in acreage. Dry weather conditions have supported timely sowing and initial estimates hint at a 15-20% increase in turmeric acreage in the crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) as farmers move away from other crops with relatively lower profit margins, Kedia Advisory said. Sowing of turmeric is expected to have started in June with the early onset of the southwest monsoon.
The most-active July contract of JEERA rose 0.2% to INR 20,025 per 100 kg on hopes of renewed export demand and easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Export demand from the region has picked up again after the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, Kedia Advisory said. Countries in the region, such as Syria, Turkey, and Afghanistan, are also reporting lower output of the spice due to adverse conditions, it said. Prices could rise further in the medium term as jeera acreage in the current crop year is likely to decline, it said.
The most-active July contract of CORIANDER was up 0.2% at INR 7,186 per 100 kg on hopes of a rise in export demand, SMC Global said. The easing of geopolitical tensions in West Asia is supporting market sentiment, the brokerage said. Coriander exports in April rose 27% on year to 654,000 tonnes from 513,000 tonnes last year, data from the commerce ministry showed.
