MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur were mixed, while prices of masur were steady in key spot markets across the country. Prices of chana rose in some markets on a rise in demand from millers, they said. Prices of tur fell in some markets while they were steady in others as muted demand matched the low supply of the legume, they said. Prices of masur were steady on account of a lack of cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose INR 50 from Wednesday to INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices rose because demand from millers increased, he said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound, fluctuating by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg in the short term, he said.

Prices are likely to rise INR 200-INR 300 per 100 kg by mid-July, when the monsoon is in full swing across the country, Mangal said. The consumption of chana and besan-based foods increases during the monsoon, he pointed out. Prices could rise further by October, before Dussehra and Diwali, he added. Meanwhile, prices of chana in Delhi rose INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,825 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,750-INR 6,800 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. About 20 trucks, carrying 20,000-25,000 kg of tur each, had arrived at the market, he said. Demand for the legume fell even as arrivals dipped, keeping prices steady, he said.

Prices are likely to rise in the near term as millers need to stock up on the legume, Srinivas said. "Currently, millers are buying only as needed, but their processing pipeline is nearly empty, so there is a strong chance demand will rise in the coming weeks," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell INR 50 from the previous day to INR 7,000-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, traders said.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,300 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices are steady owing to the lack of cues, he said. Prices could remain steady in the medium term unless the government issues tenders to purchase the legume, which could support rates, he said.

Prices of the choti variety of masur at Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 6,300-INR 6,850 per 100 kg.  End
