MUMBAI – Prices of mustard seed in key markets fell, while those of groundnut and soybean were steady, traders said Thursday. Oilseed prices are likely to trend lower this month owing to subdued demand and are expected to increase only as the festival season approaches, they said.
Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, fell INR 300 to INR 7,075-INR 7,100 per 100 kg owing to poor demand, according to Marudhar Trading Agency, a commodities trader. Arrivals of the oilseed at the Jaipur market were at 350,000 bags, up from 200,000 bags Wednesday. In the near term, the downward movement in price of mustard seed is likely to continue. Traders, however, see the price rising in the long term owing to a lower production outlook.
Mustard seed prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were unavailable as the market remained closed on account of a strike by traders protesting against the imposition of the Krishi Kalyan cess, local trader Mahesh Sameriya said. According to local media reports, 247 agricultural markets across Rajasthan are shut since Tuesday and will remain so till Friday to protest against the policies of the state government. The protest follows the government's decision to impose a Krishi Kalyan cess of 1% on traded agricultural products in state markets, starting Tuesday. Traders have sought a reduction in the cess to 0.5% for the next three years. Until June, the government had been deferring implementation of the cess in two-month intervals.
SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 3,900-INR 4,325 per 100 kg, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals were also steady at 10,400 bags. Soybean prices are expected to decline as demand shifts towards more affordable palm oil, experts said. Palm oil is trading at a discount of $90–$100 per tonne compared to soybean oil, media reports said. In June, India imported over 800,000 tonnes of palm oil , making it one of the most cost-effective edible oil options.
GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 4,600-INR 5,900 per 100 kg. Arrivals were steady at 1,500 bags, Porwal said. During the previous day, prices fell INR 50 because of poor demand. Groundnut prices are also expected to decline in the medium term, as weak demand persists amid the increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, which is commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.
